Curried Dog w/ Red Ant

Yes, you read the title right. I debated putting this photo up because as far as photos go, isn’t not the most aesthetically composed. But when you weigh in the content of the photo and the story it tells… well, you just can’t deny that’s it’s compelling shot. Just one of the many meals I ate in jungle. Hey, I was just thankful that I actually knew what was in this dish. And in case you’re wondering, the red ants are a seasoning. They’re rather poisonous, and the acidic venom give the dish a nice sour zing.

I love and hate this photo. It could be a poster child for World Vision – desolate, forgotten, poor. It makes you want to dig into your wallets and send a check (you can make those out to “Barak Bruerd” btw). But honestly, it’s not a true picture of this family at all. Rotha and I worked with this family, among many others, and they were amazing people who persevered in spite of incredible odds. They were great parents, and though their daughter here looks rather sad, it’s probably just the carb drowsiness setting in since she just finished devouring a bowl of rice the size of her head.
