I love and hate this photo. It could be a poster child for World Vision – desolate, forgotten, poor. It makes you want to dig into your wallets and send a check (you can make those out to “Barak Bruerd” btw). But honestly, it’s not a true picture of this family at all. Rotha and I worked with this family, among many others, and they were amazing people who persevered in spite of incredible odds. They were great parents, and though their daughter here looks rather sad, it’s probably just the carb drowsiness setting in since she just finished devouring a bowl of rice the size of her head.

At one of our community trainings, a mother had given her little girl a bag full of noodles to eat – which was an amusing and adorable sight to watch.

Dinosaur bird from the jungle. We had these in PNG. Didn’t realize they extended all the way up to SE Asia. Wicked grumpy animals.
